Immersion Française 5/6

École Squamish

September news

September 11, 2017

Dear parents,

Welcome to Late French Immersion. We are very excited to have your child in our group. We’ve had an action packed first week of school and are excited to dive into the school year. This is a great group of 5/6 students. They are already showing positive leadership and great enthusiasm and we look forward to teaching them this year.

We are a team!

There are three intermediate teachers on our team. We are a new team and already have an excellent working relationship. We will plan our units and many of our activities together. Our ideas and energy will translate into meaningful learning experience inside and outside the classroom. A big focus this year is ‘Les 5 au quotidien’ (The Daily 5), an approach to building language skills through reading and writing. We will also explore big ideas through Project Based Learning that gets students engaged in interactive projects across the curriculum.

We are not using agendas at all this year so please use our class blog as a daily resource ( http://madamefarstad.edublogs.org ). The blog is reviewed in class before the students leave most days. Homework will be posted on the blog and will consist of work which is not completed in class, daily review of French vocabulary and grammar, and English reading.

There is no longer a computer lab at Squamish Elementary as it has been replaced by three portable carts of laptops. We have found Google Docs is an excellent way for students to work on and share documents with their teachers and each other. Google Docs is accessed through a gmail account, therefore we ask that each family create a gmail account for their child, in which both the parents and child have the password.

Please confirm your email address by replying to this email and attach your cell number for our class contact list.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or comments regarding your child. We strongly value communication with you. We are committed to ensuring that your child has a successful year.

Sincerely,

Emily Garlock, Marc Dion, Lucie Lhotak

March news

We have enjoyed having some special guests in our classrooms over the last few weeks. They have been sharing with us their personal Squamish stories. The students have been working hard in their reflective journals and are starting to think about who they would like to interview for their personal “Si vous connaissez Squamish, vous connaissez…” project.

There will be an early dismissal on Wednesday, March 8 at 2:00. We invite parents to come into meet with their child’s teacher that afternoon.

Reading Link challenge is on Friday, March 10 at 1:00. Please encourage your child to read as much as possible before that time.

We will be walking to the swimming pool on Wednesday, March 15. Permission forms have been sent home. Please let your child’s teacher know if you are able to join us for the walk.
